React was officially released to the public as an open-source project in May 2013. It introduced a component-based architecture and the concept of the virtual DOM, which helped optimize rendering performance.

React was developed by Jordan Walke, a software engineer at Facebook. The motivation was to improve the performance and maintainability of Facebook’s user interface, which was becoming increasingly complex due to the growing user base and features.
