Origins and Motivation (2014-2015)

  • François Chollet’s Vision: Keras was developed by François Chollet, a software engineer and researcher at Google. In 2014, while working on deep learning models, he recognized that existing frameworks (like Theano and Torch) were complex and required intricate coding to build neural networks. Chollet sought to create a higher-level abstraction that would simplify the process, allowing researchers and developers to focus on innovation rather than low-level implementation.
  • Release of Keras (March 2015): Chollet released Keras as an open-source deep learning library in March 2015. His primary motivation was to create a high-level framework that would facilitate rapid experimentation and prototyping. At this point, deep learning was beginning to show immense potential in areas like computer vision and natural language processing, and Keras aimed to make the technology more accessible to a wider audience.
